Thomas Kempa

Professor Thomas (Tom) Kempa

PhD: Harvard, 2012

tkempa@jhu.edu | CV

Bio: Tom Kempa received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Boston College in 2004. After spending 2 years in the UK on a Marshall Scholarship, he arrived at Harvard University in the fall of 2006 and began his Ph.D. studies under Prof. Charles Lieber. There he pursued the discovery and development of nanoscale materials for next-generation solar cells and photonic devices. He joined Prof. Daniel Nocera’s lab as a post-doctoral fellow in the summer of 2012 and uncovered unique electrochemical and hydrodynamic phenomena, which can be harnessed to form complex and regular patterns of inorganic nanostructures. In July 2015, Tom joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins as an Assistant Professor. Tom has been the recipient of several grants and accolades including the NSF CAREER award, the Toshiba Distinguished Young Investigator award, and the Dreyfus Foundation Fellowship in Environmental Chemistry.
